By Anshor MubarokIf you’re wondering where to find the best cooking classes in Bali, Ubud and Seminyak are where to start looking. Both areas are home to some of the island’s most popular cooking schools, like Paon Bali and Jambangan in Ubud, which pair market tours with hands-on cooking sessions, and resort kitchens in Seminyak that are easier to reach if you’re short on travel time.
While both areas offer cooking classes, the experience each one delivers is quite different, and each is worth trying in its own way. If you’re looking for the best spot to learn Balinese cooking in either area, we’ve broken down our recommendations by location below so you can easily pick one that fits where you’re staying.
When people think of vacation activities in Bali, cooking classes probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. Yet this activity is genuinely fun and offers a deeper connection to the island’s rich traditions through its culinary art.
If you’re wondering what to expect during a Bali cooking class session, you’re in for a treat; these classes are built around immersive cultural experiences and everyday local life, not just kitchen time.
Throughout the class, you won’t just be cooking; you’ll also be taken on a traditional market tour or to an organic garden, taught how to make the foundational spice paste (basa genep), guided through cooking authentic Balinese dishes, and finally treated to the meal you’ve prepared.
Learning how to cook can be one of the most rewarding things to do in Ubud. The area is known for its deep ties to tradition and spirituality, and Balinese cooking is very much part of that draw.
If you’re looking for the best cooking class in Ubud to check out, here are a few recommendations:
Tucked inside an authentic Balinese family compound, Paon Bali turns cooking into more than just a recipe lesson; it’s a full, hands-on experience. Warm local chefs guide you through traditional techniques and flavors that have been passed down for generations, so you’re not just watching; you’re actually doing it.
The class runs twice daily, at 08.30 AM or 03.30 PM, both priced at IDR 350k per person. Before you even start cooking, you’ll walk through a lively traditional market and past green rice fields to get a feel for everyday life in Ubud, and free pick-up are included too, so getting there is one less thing to plan.
Another must-visit spot in Ubud for one of the best cooking classes in Bali is Jambangan Bali Cooking Class. Located in the Tegallalang area, it’s a fun destination for anyone chasing both a culinary adventure and a deeper dive into traditional culture, all while learning to whip up delicious Balinese dishes.
The class is packed with interactive activities to keep things engaging, including a traditional market tour, a walk through the rice paddies, a cultural introduction, and of course, the hands-on cooking session itself, all for IDR 500k per person. The best part: you’ll walk away with a certificate and a recipe book, so you can recreate these dishes at home whenever you’re missing Bali.
Ketut’s Bali Cooking Class is a great pick for a traditional Balinese cuisine class in Ubud. Led by Chef Ketut himself alongside experienced local instructors, this class delivers a fun, culturally rich experience from start to finish.
At just IDR 350k per person, it’s one of the more affordable options around. The class includes a market visit and covers a range of dishes, from main courses to desserts, with vegan and vegetarian options available too. Free pick-up and drop-off around the Ubud area is included as well.
If you’re wondering what to do in Seminyak beyond the usual beach clubs, tanning by the sand, or nightlife scene, add cooking classes to your radar.
The vibe here is quite different from Ubud; most cooking classes in Seminyak lean more elevated, often set inside restaurants or resorts, but they’re still just as fun and can add an extra layer of excitement to your trip. Here are a few of the best spots to learn:
Jackson Lily’s deserves a spot on your itinerary if you’re after a hands-on cooking class in Bali. If you’re looking for a private cooking class in Bali, this one’s hard to beat. This is a hands-on program held inside The Amala boutique resort, led directly by a professional chef.
The class runs in two sessions, at 11.00 AM or 4.00 PM, where you’ll learn the basa genep spice paste behind Bali’s signature flavors and cook 3 dishes of your choice, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available. Cooking classes are one of the most fun and mindful indoor activities in Bali you can try, available in several exciting corners of the island. To make the most of the experience, consider staying at an Ini Vie Hospitality property close to your chosen cooking class, whether that’s in Seminyak or Ubud.
Start your day with the full range of facilities and services Ini Vie properties offer, then ease into breakfast and a bit of light stretching while soaking in the beautiful surroundings. From there, you can arrange an EV car shuttle through Ini Vie to take you straight to your cooking class of choice, making the whole experience that much easier.
Cooking classes are scattered all over the island, but the best ones in Bali really come down to two areas. Ubud brings the market tour experience, while Seminyak keeps you closer to the beach, so the right pick depends on where you’re staying and what kind of experience you’re chasing.
