Figuring out what to wear to a Bali wedding as a guest is easier than it looks; you just have to work with the island’s tropical heat instead of against it. Think light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton in bright or neutral colors; steer clear of all-white looks; and trade your heels for flats or wedges if the ceremony’s on sand.
The real trick is matching your outfit to the dress code and the venue, whether it’s a beachfront affair or a lush garden setting. If you’re still second-guessing your look, this guide breaks down outfit ideas by venue and gender, plus the style etiquette you’ll want to avoid.
Check the Dress Code First
The first rule for nailing your wedding outfit is simple: check the wedding-guest dress code set by the couple. Many weddings are built around a specific concept or venue that shapes the overall vibe, so couples often tailor their dress code to match.
Sticking to it isn’t just a suggestion. It’s a way to honor the couple on their big day and avoid showing up under or overdressed.
What to Wear to a Beach Wedding in Bali
Beaches are the most popular destination for pretty much anything, whether that’s a honeymoon in Bali or a wedding venue.
They usually feature warm, sunny, and humid weather, so comfort should be top of mind. If the wedding is happening right on the beach, there are a few things worth keeping in mind so you don’t end up dressed all wrong for the occasion.
For Her
The key to a great beach wedding guest outfit for women is choosing pieces with light, loose, breathable cuts that keep you comfortable under the beach sun. Here’s the head-to-toe breakdown:
Fabric and color: Go for dresses in cotton, linen, or rayon that absorb sweat easily, in pastel or bright shades like peach, baby blue, or beige, since light colors won’t trap heat and leave you feeling sticky.
Silhouette inspiration: A flowy midi or maxi dress works beautifully, or try a pleated skirt paired with an elegant blouse.
Footwear and accessories: Skip stilettos or high heels; they’ll make walking on sand a struggle. Wedges, low block heels, or flat strappy sandals are much easier to move in. Finish the look with sunglasses or minimal accessories to stay effortlessly chic while keeping it beach-appropriate.
For Him
For men, beach wedding guest outfit ideas follow pretty much the same principles as women’s; comfort comes first, with light, loose clothing suited to the tropical beach setting. Here’s the full breakdown:
Fabric and color: Stick to comfortable, sweat-wicking fabrics like cotton or linen, in pastel or bright neutral shades such as cream, beige, light gray, sage green, or sky blue, so you don’t trap heat.
Silhouette inspiration: A long-sleeve shirt in thin linen or cotton paired with chinos or straight-fit cotton pants in beige or khaki strikes the right balance between polished and beach-casual.
Footwear and accessories: Suede or soft leather loafers worn without socks give a clean, put-together look, while slip-ons or espadrilles offer a casual yet still covered and appropriate option. If the event leans more relaxed, strappy leather sandals work too. For accessories, keep it simple with sunglasses and a casual watch that isn’t too formal or flashy.
What to Wear to a Garden or Resort Wedding in Bali
Beyond being a popular spot for romantic things to do in Bali, gardens and resorts are also a favorite wedding venue choice. It’s not quite as hot as beachside, but comfort still matters most. Just make sure your outfit stays event-appropriate since you’re still in an open-air setting.
For Her
The best wedding guest outfit pick for the women at a garden or resort wedding is a light dress in soft pastel or earthy tones. Here are a few tips and style inspirations to keep you comfortable while still looking elegant at an outdoor celebration:
Fabric and color: Since it’s still an outdoor setting, a linen dress remains a safe wedding-guest choice, along with lightweight satin, chiffon, or crepe, in bright pastels or earthy tones that blend nicely with the natural surroundings.
Silhouette inspiration: Flowing midi or maxi dresses with an open silhouette give off an elegant look without feeling stuffy; think tropical prints, florals, or bright and vibrant colors that suit the garden or resort atmosphere.
Footwear and accessories: Since you’ll likely be walking on grass, dirt, or even sand near the resort, skip stilettos and go for wedges, wider kitten heels, or flat shoes instead, ideal for a beach resort wedding. For accessories, a small clutch, mini handbag, or woven bag adds a nice tropical touch.
For Him
Men’s wedding guest outfits for garden and resort settings are also all about comfort, but tend to lean neater, more structured, and semi-formal, quite different from the beach’s usually more casual feel. Here’s the inspiration:
Fabric and color: Prioritize sweat-wicking fabrics like cotton or linen in a crisp, well-tailored cut, since the event is outdoors. For color, go with light neutral tones like sand, oatmeal, or champagne, or soft pastels and tropical shades.
Silhouette inspiration: A breathable linen or lightweight cotton suit works well, or pair a crisp button-down shirt with tailored trousers, linen pants, or straight-cut cotton pants. A blazer is an optional layer you can take off if the weather gets too warm, as long as the base outfit already looks polished.
Footwear and accessories: Loafers, boat shoes, or leather derby shoes worn without heavy socks are the way to go. Complete the look with a leather-strap watch or sunglasses if the event runs during the day.
What to Wear to a Traditional Balinese Wedding Ceremony
If you get an invite to a traditional Balinese wedding ceremony, you might feel a bit lost on what to wear. Unlike modern weddings, Balinese customary weddings usually call for guests to wear traditional attire.
Here’s what Balinese wedding etiquette for guests looks like when it comes to dressing for the occasion.
Women: Bali wedding guest attire for women typically means a kebaya paired with a bottom cloth (a sarong or jarik) and a selendang or waist sash wrapped around the waist. Kebaya colors tend to lean bright or elegant pastel.
Men: Men usually wear a batik shirt or a traditional Balinese safari shirt, paired with a sarong or kain kamen and an udeng head covering.
What to Avoid Wearing as a Bali Wedding Guest
There are a few things worth avoiding when attending a wedding in Bali. Some of these rules are about respecting the couple’s big day, while others are simply for your own comfort so you don’t end up dressed all wrong. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Colors to avoid: Avoid wearing white to a wedding, along with other bridal shades like ivory or cream, since these are usually reserved for the bride. Overly dark or somber colors also feel out of place against Bali’s bright, tropical setting, unless the couple’s dress code specifically calls for it.
Clothing styles that don’t quite fit: Heavy, stiff formal wear will leave you hot and sweaty in the tropical climate. Denim or casual shorts read as too laid-back, while beachwear or activewear simply doesn’t suit an occasion like this. For men, skip anything too casual like graphic tees, cargo pants, or sneakers; tailored, breathable pieces are the way to go instead. And steer clear of overly revealing outfits, especially at a traditional Balinese wedding or if the venue is near or inside a sacred area.
Footwear that’s more trouble than it’s worth: High stiletto heels make walking tricky and can easily sink into sand, grass, or uneven ground. For men, flip-flops or sneakers should also be skipped; they’re too casual for the occasion. Loafers or leather sandals are a safer bet.
